Necropsy today for dead whale
October 06, 2009 09:19 AM
Tampa, Florida - On Monday Officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission brought a dead whale to shore at Ft. De Soto to perform a necropsy.
Marine units spent several hours Sunday hauling the dead whale, found near Port Sutton and Davis Islands. The animal was considered an extreme shipping hazard and had to be removed.
After it was brought to the shoreline Monday, FWC officials identified it as a 41.5 foot-long Bryde's whale. The animal's gender and its cause of death have not been determined at this time.
Because the machinery can't pull the whale any further out of the water, it will be examined and cut into at least two parts to pull it all the way onto shore.
